In 1969, Chevrolet was producing many large-cubic-inch engine, powerful muscle cars. Of course, these cars were known for their straight-line performance, but had a tendency to come up short in the twisties. However, ever since 1967 they’d also produced a more balanced, lighter muscle car they ended up naming after the RPO code you checked off on the order sheet to get it—it was the Z/28 Camaro.
Chevrolet had to make at least 1000 Z/28s a year to homologate them so they could go racing in the SCCA Trans Am series of the day. The rules stated that the cars must be a regular production vehicle having an engine of less than 305 CI and rated at less than 300 HP. Hence the Boss 302 Mustang, de-stroked AAR/TA Cudas and Challengers, 290 CI AMX/Javelins, and the legendary Camaro Z/28.
In 1969, Chevrolet produced only 20,302 real Z/28 Camaros. The car you see here is a 1969 Z/28 equipped as an even-more-rare Rally Sport. Only approximately 3045 69 Z/28 RS’ were produced.
